The idea that Hell is self-inflicted, like someone punching himself, is explicitly contrary to Scripture. Luke 13 for example describers people in hell wanting to go to Heaven, but Jesus has locked the door from his side and refuses to unlock it. The Bible speaks of Jesus "smiting" people with the breath of his lips. "Smite" is a transitive, not reflective verb.
