Anyone recall reading it?

It seems there are two extremes out there. First, their are Catholics too eager to accept whatever scientific theory is taught, and assume that science is always correct and the Church must make whatever changes necessary to reconcile its teachings with science. Second, on the other end of the spectrum, are those who feel it is heresy, or at least bad Catholicism, to accept that our system of planets revolve around the Sun (heliocentric). Some say the Earth is flat and does not rotate on its axis. Both of these extremes are wrong. Galileo was not the first or only person to support a heliocentric solar system. He could not provide proof that the heliocentric model was correct, because the science and technology of his day was not adequate. Since his lifetime, we have been able to prove that the Earth revolves around the Sun by measuring the small shift in nearby stars against the background of nearer stars, using the Earth's orbital diameter as a baseline. We have observational proof of this parallax. Perhaps more importantly, the basic proven physical laws governing the mass and gravitational effects of objects make it impossible to accept that the Sun, which is 332,946 times the mass of Earth and 99% of the mass of the entire solar system, would revolve around the relatively puny Earth. Why do no comets have orbits around the Earth? All comets, whether periodic or "one-timers" are attracted to the Sun. I'm sure there are other proofs, but these come immediately to mind. Ptolemy, who had devised, and often refined, the Geocentric theory was certainly a genius in devising a system that explained the planetary motions and characteristics in the pre-telescopic era. But when Venus and Mercury were shown to go through phases, similar to Earth's moon, it was clear they, at least, orbited the Sun. In short, the heliocentric solar system is no longer a theory, but a fact. At the same time, the Church owes no apology for sticking to the Geocentric solar system over the heliocentric model at the time of Galileo.
Most importantly, one most realize that our salvation does not depend upon what scientific notion we do or do not accept. Indeed, to claim such would certainly be putting science above the Creator of everything. I do not believe that God will judge an individual's eternal soul by whether he believes the Earth to be flat or not, but by other criteria such as following His commandments.

Yes, as I read the article, I felt it was spinning as hard as it could to defend Catholicism. The Church doesn't need defending, but denying it's past actions is revisionist and defensive, for no good reason.

Hi Scott,

I'm writing a research paper on this topic would you mind giving me a source for that quote from Cardinal Bellarmino?

Thanks

Scott:
In addition to what David already said, if you believe the Bible has the answers to everyone's questions, you are going to be thoroughly disappointed.

De Lubac, at length, describes the four senses of Scripture, which was clearly taught by Origen in the fourth century. This was the standard position of understanding the Bible until Protestant literalism. The Catholic Church has not followed this.
