This old argument allows Christians (and religious people, in general) to cherry pick what should be interpreted literally and what should be taken as metaphor. As many before me have asked, "if there is a turd in the pool, do you only swim in the part of the pool where the turd is not?"

The serpent in Genesis was not a snake. It was the deceiver (Satan). The punishment for the deception AFTER was to be a snake. So obviously it wasn't a snake prior. So no chit chatty snake.

So atheists cant stop with the "talking snakes”.

The snake was punished and cursed to continue to be what he already is? on your belly you shall go?

Adam and Even received curses that they didn't already have?

"Christians realize that this is not really the sort of story that we need to take literally." Well if a Christian says it doesn't need to be taken literally, then why take any of the bible literally? Who gets to pick and choose what is literal or not? The only reason some Christians say it's 'not literal', is because it's so embarrassing to claim it is, that they only way round the problem is to say 'oh that part was never meant to be literal'.
