It's easy to say "hey, don't mention that because that's not fair," and then dismiss it as a non-problem. Well, it doesn't work like that. Maybe most of you don't believe in a literal 6-day world creation, but many people do. Talk to the average Joe in a catholic country like Brazil and you will find several people that think the bible is to be taken literally, including the 6-day nonsense.

One cannot fully explain a subject matter like this in only a few minutes, but it is certainly worth a listen to if you find yourself struggling with the concept of hell:

I am currently caring for a friend who has been dying from cancer for many years. He converted to Christianity a couple of years ago and is now close to death. Like me(I consider myself to be an agnostic), my friend has always been a spiritual person. Lately, we have been discussing end of life issues, and at times have briefly discussed why I am not an Evangelical. I pretty much stated that the reason why I am not is because many of the Christians I have dealt with are hypocritical. They lack self-awareness when they project their "sins" on others, or use their belief in hell and heaven to "heap burning coals on their enemies heads," all the while suggesting that they do this "from love" and are trying to save others. This is especially maddening when these professed godly people engage in all sorts of sordid activities and then arrogate to themselves a get out of jail free card ( repentance) to avoid eternal punishment; or when they justify policies and actions that actually hurt people and this World for the sake of the afterlife. I may be mistaken, but in such instances, my gut instinct senses that such people are trying to quell their own anxieties and gloss over their secret iniquities while exercising and "exorcising" a sublimated thirst for revenge and a sordid gloating over the prospect that others who do not believe as they do will burn: "FOREVER!" They take presumptuousness one step further and denigrate this World for the sake of the next, and thus excuse themselves from the complexities of life and this World. In my opinion, there is nothing more "fundamental," “evil,” dishonest, and sanctimonious in wishing that others who are otherwise good people should burn because they don't believe as Christians do. Now don't get me wrong, I am an admirer of Jesus, a great and insightful human and philosopher, who understood much about human nature and the dilemma of being human, of being flawed and in need of grace and forgiveness. But I believe that much of his teachings have been diluted through the ages (Council of Nicea 325 AD) to fit political agendas that use a contrived deus ex machina of salvation and damnation to control others through fear ( like Pascal’s Wager), and in certain instances, violence. There are other gospels, such as the Gospel of Mary and Thomas, that did not fit the narrative of the ancient church leaders. Anyhow, I digress. Here is my point: in their dishonest attempts to persuade others to convert and repent, many of today's Christians and their leaders set down their cross to cast aspersions on others who will not, with a clear conscience, subscribe to a religion that professes “love” through eternal violence and uses God as a prop for self-serving purposes. As one philosopher once aptly quoted Dante with regards to Dante’s poetic inscription over the gateway to the Christian Hell: “ Eternal Love also created me.” Imbued no doubt with the Wisdom of the serpent, This philosopher felt it to be more fitting to post the following inscription over the gates of Heaven: “ Eternal Hate also created me."

Atheist here. I usually avoid Strange Notions like a plague, but at the behest of some colleagues I decided to join the fray. My observations have found that the comments sections here typically betray/ignore all the standard rules of civil and reasonable discourse, which in my mind, highlights the failure of the original project at large.

Regarding the original post, I agree that these points are solid, however the best tip that could have been given is to simply point Christians towards actual atheistic philosophers who have published and offered devastating critiques of theism. But perhaps, because it leads to incidents like demonstrated below, I can see why it's something that wasn't suggested. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/64e8d050e2b9bdb2bb6c3737a22121c1f8a30955ca055990d9d2f696820928e2.jpg

As a believer, this came off as slightly passive agressive towards atheists, but well written with solid points nonetheless.

A little late to the party, but I enjoy reading atheist & theist thought.

@dennisbonnette:disqus

>I call BS on your teaching credentials.

>If you are going to lie at least make it convincing

I am pretty sure this is against the rules. Specifically (3,4 and 5).

Just saying.....

I don't have to prove anything. I dinna care what you believe. I am not soliciting belief from you rather you are trying to convince me my beliefs are false and you are clearly not competent to do so.

Also Dr. B is a PhD Philosopher and he has already implied you get an F in logic. Get good scrub.
