The problem of evil is in my opinion a very great issue for established religions - the idea that, say, an innocent child would suffer from a horrible, painful disease and then die at a young age, doesn't lend itself to the idea that there is a divine purpose. If there is a divine purpose, it gives every appearance of being intolerably cruel. That is a problem for religion. And merely asserting that God exists outside time and space, and that Jesus is coequal with God are not arguments - they are just assertions. I don't see anything here to challenge any of this football player's quite reasonable questions. And CS Lewis's argument is appalling- Jesus could very easily have been a good man - much of what he is reported to have said makes sense. Unfortunately, it's hard to know exactly what he actually said himself, and what was added long after his death by the gospel writers. But there's a quite reasonable approach of taking many of the good principles he enunciated as a healthy contribution to the debate about morality, while retaining a scepticism about the more metaphysical claims he may, or may not have uttered.

@Branson your liar lunatic lord argument is weak. It is widely dismissed by even moderately intelligent people on both sides of the aisle. Just in case you’ve never thought much about it - this argument hinges on the truth of the actual biblical texts as being 100% accurate. It doesn’t account for the disciples misinterpreting, embellishing, or adding in later, or perhaps Jesus misspoke or was simultaneously a little full of himself and a good person at the same time, or speaking allegorically, or trying to be persuasive etc. too many alternatives that aren’t included in this option of three and there literally could very well be 100 more possibilities unnamed here not to mention it could just be legend. Your bias in this article using small examples and then stringing up an argument against this man is weak and disingenuous as well. The audacity to trot out that tired C.S. Lewis quote is discouraging to me and tells me that I’m reading a writer who really isn’t deep or honest. Keep working - I hope you will find what you are looking for - but be honest and dig.

if you don't believe in hell, then why make serious arguments about it?
(ex: God is very evil because He will send unrepentant sinners to
everlasting place of torment)

Because there are some people who believe hell is real. I do not think this belief is consistent with an all-good God.

so, then, since you don't believe in hell (either eternal torment or annihilation), therefore, you made judgment that my God is really good!

i don't care if the Catholic church supports the belief that hell is an eternal torment for them.. you have been informed that this site is for everybody, whether they are against catholic doctrines or not.

I was responding to a post by a Catholic about the Catholic conception of hell. We can also discuss your conception as well.

i'm here to correct any misunderstandings about the nature of hell, and i already said that.

How do you know you are correct about the nature of hell? Catholics and various protestant denominations believe is a place of eternal torment. What do you know that they do not?

they believe that hell is an eternal torment, and yet don't believe the church's doctrines about the existence of God

Actually we don't believe in either.

Thank you. I think the comments are inappropriate too, but it would be improper for me to flag them, since I am involved in the discussion, and it would be winning by a technicality on my part.

There is a flag button in the top corner. They usually don't do anything to theists that are flagged because they seem to be able to do no wrong. But maybe we'll get lucky. I've flagged both of them.
